Silk in Indonesia: Its History, Ancient and Current Silk Textiles
Prepared for the symposium “Silks from the Silk Road: Origin, Transmission and Exchange”, held on October 2015 by the China National Silk Museum, Hangzhou, China.
Since early times, silk has been a much favorite textile all around the world, this is also the case in Indonesia. Through scrutinizing ancient documents, the paper will trace back the origins of silk in the archipelago, its history and use in society. The paper will present ancient textiles found in Indonesia and discuss some new silk textiles made locally. The paper will close with a section on the current state and the future of silk in Indonesia.
