Silk has been one of the main Chinese export commodities for over two millennia. But Russia was not actively involved in this trade until the seventeenth century. There is clear evidence of a certain currency of Chinese silks in Russia in the seventeenth to eighteenth century. There are archive materials, such as rulers’ orders and letters, concerning the imports of silk from China; besides, some limited quantities of old silk items have survived in churches and museums.
