(2015)OTTOMAN SILK WEAVING THROUGH THE EXAMPLES OF OTTOMAN SILK IN TOPKAPI PALACE MUSEUM COLLECTION

Ottoman Empire could meet its need for raw material in silk weaving from Iran. Raw silk produced in the provinces of Cürcan, Amul, Mâzenderân, Gîlân, Şemahi and Şirvan which are located in the South of Hazar Sea, Iran were sold in Tabriz market and silk bought by traders was arriving at Amasya over Sa‘d Pit (Aras valley) by passing through Erzurum-Erzincan-Tokat route by caravans and from here by following Kastamonu-Bolu or Çorum-Ankara routes, it was arriving at Bursa. Among the kinds of thrown silk brought to Bursa market, there were high qualified Gîlân, Mâzenderân and Esterâbâdî (Astarâbâdî) called setta stravai by Italians. Bursa became one of the biggest silk markets of the Middle East at the end of 14th century. Bursa didn’t become only an international warehouse, but also high qualified silk fabric center at the end of 15th century.
