Date: 2022-11-18
Textile relics which have been found in Korea are usually excavated from tombs of Joseon Dynasty or found in descendent garments. Before those of Joseon Dynasty, ancient textiles can be found in bulbokjang and topbokjang from Goryeo Dynasty and some of them are unearthed from ancient tombs or archaeological sites. Most of ancient textiles are small fragments as it is difficult to preserve them intact because they had been made up of natural organic ingredients. This natural organic ingredient is easy to be burned, rotten and damaged by termites. However, despite of their imperfection, the ancient textiles are valuable sources for researching features of the time. Archaeological sites where have relics within Baekje Cultural Areas are Buyeo Wangheungsa Temple Site and Neungangol Ancient Tombs, Gongju Royal Tomb of King Muryeong and Suchonri Ancient Tombs, Chungwon Ochang Songdaeri ruins, Naju
Bokamri Ancient Tombs.
Although written records regarding ancient relics appear in ancient writings, going by the circumstances that it is hard to clarify which textiles have been used, types and amounts of relics found in Royal Tomb of King Muryeong among Baekje Cultural Areas are very important. With the preservation for excavated relics, textile from Geumdongsikri is presumed as a part of shoes and its sewing method, ornament, and decoration method are revealed. The type of textiles are Geum (錦), Gi (綺), Ra (羅), various Tabby silks with various densities, crepe(縐紗) with embroidery and bast fiber textile. Also, ornaments such as embroidery, braid, beads, gilt are shown. For embroidery, too many methods such as chin stitch, plain stitch, braid stitch are shown, so researchers cannot even name them. Based on the techniques, it can be presumed that Baekje already had various weaving and decoration techniques and had a higher level of garment culture.
