The Palekat or Plekat sarong originating in the east coast of the Indian continent is a checkered textile used as sarong since the 17th century in the Indonesian archipelago. This paper traces back not only the humble origins of the textile along the Maritime Silk Road, its history and functions, but also the textile interaction and current developments that evolved in a multi-ethnic Indonesian society.
